 
The Department of Christian Education embraces the vision of our founding father, Richard Allen, who organized the first African American Sunday School at Mother Bethel A.M.E. Church in Philadelphia, PA in the year of 1794. The Department of Christian Education has developed a comprehensive program of Christian education which leads persons to obtain the knowledge of the doctrine of the A.M.E. Church, the holy scriptures and the Christian Church.
The Eighth Episcopal District's Department of Christian Education provides resource materials for all the education work of the church. This department also provides members of the district the opportunity for certification (Christian Education Director, Sunday School Superintendent, etc.), training and development through our Annual Christian Education Congress, Annual and District Conferences as well as Sunday School Conventions.
Because the African Methodist Episcopal Church recognizes the need for specialized ministries of Christian education, the Connectional Church has developed the following departments to meet the needs of its members:
